The Immigrant Right’s Defense Council (“IRDC”) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) focused on protecting immigrant rights in the United States. IRDC works to prevent harm to vulnerable immigrants from unscrupulous scam artists who, under the guise of being a non-attorney immigration “professional” or "consultant" provide legal advice that can have devastating effects on an immigrant’s legal status and can lead to deportation.
Immigration law is complex and unforgiving. A small mistake can place an unsuspecting immigrant in deportation proceedings or create years’ worth of delay in obtaining benefits. In the United States, only licensed attorneys, and in some specific circumstances, nonprofit charitable organizations and their representatives, are able to provide legal advice and assist immigrants and their families in tackling the complex immigration process. “Immigration consultants” cannot give legal advice and can only translate answers to forms. Our mission is to help people who were harmed by “immigration consultants,” “notaries/notarios,” and other malfeasant authorized representatives, attorneys, and so-called “specialists.”
Using our legal resources, we fight on behalf of immigrants and their families. We also assist victims with obtaining pro bono legal representation, through dedicated volunteer attorneys, to take legal action against these immigration consultant scams.
If you or someone you know was harmed by an immigration consultant, notary/notario, "specialist," attorney, or any other person offering to assist with immigration services, don’t wait- report it to IRDC. You may do so, here, online, and (if you prefer) anonymously. We can also provide you with a referral to pro bono attorneys practicing in this field if you are interested in taking personal action against someone who has negatively affected your immigration status.
